Screen-to-stage Beatles bio-musical Backbeat, based on the 1994 Iain Softley film of the same name, opens at The Duke of York's Theatre this October directed by the award-winning David Leveaux.
The musical adaptation which is also written and co-directed by Softley, opened in Glasgow's Citizen Theatre in February 2010 and revolves around the band's early years performing cover versions in the seedy clubs of Hamburg.
The plot centres on the relationships between original bassist and promising painter Stuart Sutcliffe, his best friend and band mate John Lennon and German photographer Astrid Kirchherr, the woman he fell in love with. Backbeat is the compelling story of Stuart's struggle to choose between rock 'n roll, fame, loyalty, art and love.
