Show details

Beautiful weaves the iconic Carole King songs written in the 1960s and 70s into the story of her journey from schoolgirl to megastar. From her teenage years in Brooklyn to her relationship with husband and song writing partner Gerry Goffin and subsequent friendship and playful rivalry with fellow husband and wife song writing team Barry Mann and Cynthia Weil, to her remarkable rise to fame in 1971 following the release of her massively selling, multiple Grammy award-winning album Tapestry.

Beautiful is a jukebox musical studded with timeless classics including I Feel the Earth Move, So Far Away and Will You Love Me Tomorrow. There are also performances of other songs from the 1950s and '60s, among them Oh! Carol - a song written and performed by Neil Sedaka, King's former boyfriend.

Based in New York, King and her husband Gerry Goffin became a prolific songwriting team producing material for acts such as the Drifters and the Shirelles, but while King dreamed of domestic security, Goffin was a compulsive philanderer and the pair eventually went their separate ways, leaving King free to achieve remarkable success as a solo artist.

The show is written by American Douglas McGrath who describes Beautiful as being "about a girl who works hard, achieves her professional dreams and has her heart broken by the boy she loves.
"She thinks it's all over, but then finds something more beautiful in her life than she realised was there before."

"A thoroughly pleasant night at the theatre".
"Slick, beautifully played and terrifically tuneful"
Dominic Maxwell, The Times

"Gives a wonderfully endearing performance... in a piece that shows King evolve from hired hit-maker to empowered solo artist".
The Independent

"Sweet and happy as pie". "It milks the tear ducts, gives you a long list of searing songs and will send many a couple home arm-in-arm".
