Show details

The stage production of Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory has arrived in the West End.

Staged by the Oscar winning director, Sam Mendes, it has cost £10m to produce. There's the factory, the chocolate, the golden ticket, Charlie, Willie Wonka - in fact, all the ingredients you would expect as one of the most famous children's books ever written takes to the stage in a brand new, big budget, all singing, all dancing musical.

The expectations on its director to deliver a blockbuster hit are high. Sam Mendes, Director commented: "I think any big show is a big pressure and I think if you don't like that kind of pressure then you shouldn't be doing it. But for me it's just a pleasure, it's a privilege to do something on this scale and to do a book that I've always loved since I was a kid. I desperately tried to get the rights to this on three other occasions and was forbidden them."

The producers of this show seem to have done everything in their power to ensure its success. There's spectacular sets, a well-drilled cast and in Sam Mendes, an Oscar winning director. But there is no amount of money or talent that can overcome the reality of putting on a new show in the West End; it is a very risky business.

Matilda is a musical that's done well and is another Roald Dahl story. How do the award-winning duo who have written the music and lyrics for Charlie feel about Matilda's musical success?

Marc Shaiman, Composer & lyricist: "I wouldn't say that we're looking forward to the constant comparisons that are going to be made between our show and Matilda's, but there's nothing we can do about it and it is so wonderfully done."

It's not cheap to take the family to the theatre and there's plenty of good shows to choose from which means this production is pulling out all the stops to be the West End's golden ticket.
