Show details

Following a sold out run at the Royal Court Theatre, the keenly anticipated production of Jez Butterworth’s major new play The Ferryman transfers to the West End for a strictly limited 16 week season.

Directed by Sam Mendes and co-produced by Sonia Friedman, the cast includes multi award-winning actor and writer Paddy Considine, Laura Donnelly and Genevieve O’Reilly.

Set in rural Londonderry at the height of the Troubles, The Ferryman is a mighty family epic with generations of one family crammed into its dynamic world. The action takes place in 1981, the year of the hunger strike in which Bobby Sands and nine other republican prisoners starved themselves to death in protest over prison conditions.

The Carney farmhouse is a hive of activity with preparations for the annual harvest afoot. After a gruelling day of hard work on the land, a traditional night of feasting and celebrations lies ahead. But this year the evening will be interrupted by an unexpected visitor.

The Telegraph

'Butterworth and Mendes deliver a shattering tale of passion and violence. All the performances are invested with the same intense detail.'
